Why I Wrote Maya’s Last Wish: A Journey of Love, Culture, and Self-Discovery

Writing, for me, has never been just a hobby — it has always been a love affair. I started writing when I was a child, long before I even understood what it truly meant to be a writer. I would scribble poems, reflections, or random thoughts on pieces of paper, simply because words made me feel alive. Over time, writing became more than an activity — it became my way of understanding the world and expressing what I couldn’t say aloud. Whenever life brought moments of uncertainty or silence, I turned to writing for clarity and comfort. It became my constant companion, my truest love.
Alongside writing, travelling became another passion that shaped who I am. I have been fortunate to travel to more than fifteen countries, and every journey has left a mark on my heart. Each destination taught me something new about life, people, and emotions. But among all the countries I have visited, Malaysia holds a special place. It is a country I fell deeply in love with from the very first visit. Its landscapes, its people, its vibrant cultural blend — everything about Malaysia felt both unique and strangely familiar. In a way, it reminded me of India, a land of diversity and contrasts, where multiple cultures, languages, and religions coexist beautifully. My connection with Malaysia grew stronger with each visit. I found myself returning again and again, sometimes for inspiration, sometimes simply to feel that sense of belonging. I visited Malaysia eight times in just four years, and every trip gave me a new perspective. I explored Kuala Lumpur’s bustling streets, Penang’s artistic corners, Melaka’s historical richness, and Langkawi’s serene beaches. The country began to feel like a second home — a place where my heart always wanted to return. It wasn’t just the beauty of its places but the warmth of its people that stayed with me.
With such deep affection, I knew I wanted to write something about Malaysia. Initially, I thought of creating a travel book, one that would capture the food, the culture, and the charm of the nation. But when I began working on it, I realized something — I wasn’t very good at writing a traditional travel book. I didn’t want to just describe places or list recommendations. What I truly wanted was to write about the emotions behind those places — the feelings they stirred, the people they represented, and the quiet stories that lingered in the air.
That realization brought me back to an unfinished draft I had written years earlier — a love story that I had set aside, unsure of how to continue. One day, as I revisited that draft, it struck me: what if I merged my experiences in Malaysia with this love story? What if I used Malaysia not just as a setting, but as a living, breathing part of the story itself? And that’s how the idea for Maya’s Last Wish came to life.
When I began writing Maya’s Last Wish, I poured my heart into it. It became more than just a novel; it became an emotional journey. Through Maya’s story, I wanted readers to experience Malaysia — its cultural depth, its diversity, its human warmth — while also exploring universal emotions like love, ambition, loss, and hope. Maya Tan Xin Yi, the protagonist, is a strong, passionate, and ambitious young woman. She studies in Edinburgh but carries Malaysia in her soul. Her journey reflects the struggle so many people face today — balancing love with dreams, emotions with ambition, and the heart’s desires with life’s practicalities.
As the story unfolded, I realized that it was not just about love or heartbreak, but about something deeper — the urgency of life. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned, both from writing and travelling, is that life is too short to wait. We postpone too many things — dreams, relationships, experiences — assuming we’ll have time later. But time doesn’t wait. Through Maya’s Last Wish, I wanted to remind readers of that truth. The book carries a quiet message: dare not linger, do what you want to do now, don’t postpone what your heart truly desires.

For me, writing this book fulfilled three of my long-held dreams — to bring my first love story to readers, to let people experience the beauty and diversity of Malaysia through the eyes of my characters, and to share one of the most important life lessons I’ve learned: act before it’s too late. These elements came together naturally, and Maya’s Last Wish became a bridge between my two loves — writing and travelling.
I know this book might not be the most perfect love story ever written, but perfection was never my aim. What mattered to me was sincerity — the honesty of emotions, the authenticity of places, and the truth within the characters. Every line in the book carries a piece of me — my travels, my memories, and my reflections on love and life. I hope readers will look beyond the technicalities and feel the sincerity that went into writing it.

Maya’s Last Wish is, at its heart, a love letter — not only to Malaysia, but to everyone who has ever struggled between following their dreams and holding on to love. It celebrates courage, imperfection, and the beauty of human emotions. Through Maya and Aaryan’s journey, I wanted to take readers across Malaysia’s soul — from its rain-kissed cities to its peaceful islands — and remind them that love and life are both fleeting, precious, and worth living fully.
When I think about this book today, I realize it’s not just Maya’s story; it’s also my story — a reflection of my love for writing, my admiration for Malaysia, and my belief that one must live passionately and purposefully. If this book inspires even one reader to take a trip they’ve been postponing, to follow a dream they’ve been delaying, or to express love before it’s too late, I’ll consider my purpose fulfilled.
